In the 5th century BC, the Greek physician, Hippocrates, wrote the first documents concerning their employment in food and medicine, while Pliny the elder presents a first classification of edible and poisonous species known at the time. The Romans are very fond of mushrooms and consume them mainly as condiment. It is also a highly sought after from the middle ages to the Renaissance.
